About

St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is the first African American church built in Wisconsin in 1886. Ezekiel Gillespie was a Milwaukee freedman, shopkeeper and a co_founder of St. Mark A.M.E. Church. Gillespie is most known for suing the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the 1860's for the right to vote and won. This gave African American men the right to vote in Wisconsin for the first time. St. Mark AME Church, the "Church of the Anvil", is located at 1616 W. Atkinson Ave., Milwaukee, WI.
